UATP ADVOCACY TO THE AFRICAN UNION TO HAVE THE STATUS OF SPECIALIZED INSTITUTION IN CHARGE OF URBAN MOBILITY ISSUES

On the sidelines of the PIDA inaugural week which was held from 13 to 17 November 2015 in Abidjan, a delegation of UATP composed of the Secretary General (Mr. CISSE Yssoufou) and The Honorary President of UITP/UATP (Dr. Ousmane THIAM) met HE Dr. Elham MA Ibrahim, Commissioner in charge of Infrastructure and Energy at the Commission of the African Union, on 16 November 2015.

At this meeting, which is intended as an advocacy, it was question of strengthening and formalizing relations between UATP and the African Union Commission. It is mostly to make the UATP an AU Specialized Institution to contribute to addressing the challenges of urban mobility in Africa.

To this end, a draft of memorandum of understanding is being prepared for submission to the Department of Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission. The discussions on this memorandum could begin in the period from 1 to 4 December 2015 in Addis Ababa during the visit of the UATP Secretary General, taking part by invitation in a workshop of SSATP (Transport Policy Program in Africa under the auspices of World Bank and ECA).
